Fire extinguisher siting

Extinguishers must be fixed in a permanent position. If the extinguisher is 3Kg or 3lt and above then they should be wall mounted and handles are to be one meter from the floor as well as a 2 Kg CO2 extinguisher.

Smaller extinguishers need to be mounted so handles are one and a half meters from the floor.

If for any reason fire extinguishers can not be wall mounted then a fire extinguisher stand would be suitable.

The British Standard states that the position and type of a fire extinguisher should be indicated on a sign so that if it is removed then this can be identified during an inspection and a replacement can ordered.

Signs should be fitted next to the extinguisher to help identify the extinguisher in place and their suitability for the different types of fires.

Fire extinguishers should be located according to the provisions of BS5306-8:2012 in visible positions, wall mounted or in stands and they need to be where people can see them following an escape route. Extinguishers should also not be placed too close to specific risks.
